About the Artwork:

The Cultivator, 2020. Tian Waike. Ink and color on rice paper.

This piece takes its inspirational cues from a dance number titled 'The Cultivator,' featured in Shen Yun Performing Arts, a renowned global performance troupe that brings ancient Chinese cultures to life on stage. Although the painting is named after a practitioner of spiritual discipline, its actual focus steers towards elucidating the essence encapsulated within the two Chinese characters: '精進' (Jingjin, which translates to 'diligence' or 'devotion' in English). Therefore, the true protagonist of this work is not an individual but the concept of 'Jingjin,' which is intentionally positioned at the center of the composition.

Mountains, often symbolizing unyielding will and steadfastness in traditional Chinese art, create a meaningful context in this piece. The depicted individual and the mountainous backdrop converse in a symbiotic relationship, each offering interpretative nuances to the other, weaving a tapestry that is rich in symbolic nuances and fascinating in its conceptual depth. This interactive portrayal between character and context provides a thought-provoking commentary, prompting viewers to delve into the profound contemplation on the essence and manifestation of ‘devotion’ within one's spiritual journey.
